Final First Impressions of the L.A. Rams Draft

Sorting out the highs and lows of Cam Akers ,
Jordan Fuller, and the rest of the Rams' 2020 NFL Draft class.



Day One Grade-- I would give it a D+. No first round picks.

So mid-season before the trade deadline, the Rams made a trade with the Jaguars. Jalen Ramsey for 1 first round pick in 2020, 1 first round pick in 2021, and a 4th round pick in 2021. I dont think that was a smart move trading 2(!) first round picks for someone who isn't even worth one 1st round pick. He is worth a 6th round pick. Jalen Ramsey didn't do well enough in 2019-2020 season for that. Hopefully he will be good in the 2020-2021 season.

Day Two Grades-- This is for the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
B+ for 2nd round. We got a running back (Cam Akers) and a wide receiver, Van Jefferson. Both well needed positions.

For 3rd round I think I would say A- because we got a LB and a safety and we definitely need those to help Jaylen Ramsey on the defense and build a defense around him. We need more corners though. We lost one of our star corners, Aqib Talib.

Day Three Grades-- This is for the 4th through 7th round.
For those rounds, I will give it a C.

We need safeties and have them. And we have a kicker to replace Greg Zuerlein. We have a safety named Jordan Fuller, and he came from OSU, a stacked team. Their basketball team is good too.


Overall Grade: B- | C+.
I would have made a better grade if they had a first round pick and didn't also trade the 2021 1st round draft pick.

Worst Pick: Brycen Hopkins (TE)
We don't need any more tight ends. We have Gerald Everett who is nasty and Tyler Higbee who is good for possession catches for the first down.

Best Pick: Cam Akers (RB)
He is BEAST and worked with a trash offensive line (at Florida State).

    This was very interesting. I don't know much about the NFL draft, but even I can see that two first round picks for a player who had an OK season seems like a big gamble. Hopefully he proves he was worth it.

    Jayshawn- I second Ms. Powers! Please do one on the Patriots. Also, I would love to read more about the history of the draft and a simple explanation of how it works. How long have you been following draft? Also- How did you like the virtual draft?

      Ehh, virtual draft was alright. Actual draft is better. The Patriots will be after the Lions. Next next next next blog away.

    Jayshawn- this is a really great analysis, as a Florida Gator fan, I think the Rams got a steal with Van Jefferson who was easily the best route runner in the draft. He should provide them a great third down option other than Cooper Kupp. Also as a Florida Gator fan I agree Florida State is trash, but Cam Akers was the sole bright spot, he scored a long touchdown against us which got called back for a silly penalty, then if I remember correctly scored on a great one handed catch later. As someone who also enjoys the analytical side of football, I wish that I got started as early as you have. Would love to see more of your breakdowns.

    Hey, Jayshawn! I totally get your frustrations about Jalen Ramsey: he has a really big mouth and should have had a much better year than he did last year. He was better when he was on the Jags, but I think part of that is because the Rams are in a more challenging division than the Jags are. Ramsey has to deal with the 49ers and the Seahawks in his division- they both went deep in the playoffs last year and have to be crazy hard to defend! That's a log way of me saying I think Ramsey can be better, and I hope the guys the Rams picked up in the third round will help him out on D. Otherwise, it really was a waste of two first round picks. Also, go NY Giants! :)

    Hi Jayshawn,

    Great analysis. You also dropped some in depth knowledge of these players. Totally agree that the Rams are stacked at TE. I had Bigby on my fantasy team, and he lit it up for the last 4-5 weeks.

    You do a nice job of placing Jalen Ramsey at the center of the Rams draft, even though he wasn't drafted. What an impact that trade made. And I agree the Rams paid a lot for Ramsey's reputation and past success (Bill Belicheck prides himself on never doing that). Hopefully, he can rebound this upcoming season and play like he played a couple years ago when he was really elite.

    Thanks for writing this and keep it up!

    Maybe one tip: add some stats. For example, how many picks did Ramsey have last year as opposed to previous years? Or how many rushing yards did Akers have at FSU? That might add some legitimacy to your opinions on how good or bad they are.
